Join us in welcoming our new director of the Washington University Symphony Orchestra in his inaugural performance. Dr. Horst Buchholz has been a driving force in the St. Louis musical community since his appointment as Director of Sacred Music at the Cathedral of St. Louis. This program will include the overture to Die Meistersinger by Wagner, a work by Hummel featuring violist Amy Greenhalgh, our new Director of Strings, and a piece by MacDowell.

Conductor:
Dr. Horst Buchholz, conductor, organist, and music educator, is Director of Sacred Music at the Cathedral and the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Dr. Buchholz came to St. Louis from Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, where he had served as Organist and Choirmaster since 2008. Prior to that he held positions in cathedrals and churches in the United States and Germany, including the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver, Colorado.
Buchholz studied organ and sacred music in his native Germany at the Berlin College of Church Music and the University of Arts. His organ teachers have included Heinz Lohmann, Peter Wackwitz, and Rudolf Heinemann. Among his conducting teachers were Martin Behrmann, Uwe Gronostay, and Erich Bergel. Shortly after receiving his graduate degree in Church Music and a teaching certificate in Music Theory from the University of Arts in Berlin in 1989, Buchholz continued his post-graduate studies in the United States, where he received his Doctor of Music degree in conducting from Indiana University.
As a chorus member and assistant with the Berlin Philharmonic Chorus, he worked with and performed under such eminent maestros as Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, and Herbert von Karajan. Dr. Buchholz’s other accolades and accomplishments include his ten-year service as Music Director of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, which honored him with the title "Conductor Laureate". As guest conductor he has appeared with the Colorado Symphony & Opera Colorado, as well as with orchestras and operas in Mexico, Japan, Korea, and several European countries. As organist he has performed in major cathedrals and concert halls around the world.
Dr. Buchholz also earned a great list of credits as a music educator: member of the organ faculty at Cleveland State University; Associate Professor of Music and Director of Schola Cantorum at St. John Vianney Seminary (Denver); Assistant Professor of Conducting, Director of Orchestral Studies, and organ faculty at Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. He also serves as Vice-President of the Church Music Association of America and is a regular faculty member at their annual Colloquium.
In 2014 he founded ProArte Saint Louis, a professional vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of Early Music, and serves as their Artistic Director and conductor. Most recently Maestro Buchholz accepted the position of Orchestra Director at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Buchholz is married to soprano, Dr. MeeAe Cecilia Nam, who is a Professor on the faculty of Eastern Michigan University. |
