52nd Annual Moonlight Ramble |
Community Events |
Event Description: |
Sponsored by AARP, the 52nd Annual Moonlight Ramble, the world’s original nighttime bike ride, returns to the streets of downtown St. Louis on Saturday, August 29. Attracting thousands of riders each year, the Moonlight Ramble includes a leisurely bike ride under the light of the moon through the streets of St. Louis, a vendor area, entertainment, a glow-in-the-dark commemorative event t-shirt, and a family-friendly after-ride party with snacks and drinks. The starting point is located just south of Busch Stadium at the corner of 8th & Cerre Street. The route will be revealed 48 hours before the ride. Participants can choose between a short (10.5) ride and a long (18.5) ride.
Riders should arrive to the event between 9pm-11:45pm, the ride starts promptly at 12:01am. Riders 21 and older will receive one complimentary beer at the after-ride party sponsored by Urban Chestnut, with jams provided by Super Majik Robots.
Registration is now open. The costs are $50 (Premier Rider), $25 (Adult Rider) and $10 (Youth Rider ages 5-12). Child riders four years and younger are free, and all riders ages 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. A portion of the proceeds will benefit HI-USA and the nonprofit law center at Washington University. To register, log onto www.moonlightramble.com or call 314-613-7966.
Advance packet pick-ups will be available at a variety of St. Louis bicycle shops leading up to the ride. Riders will receive event shirts and credentials. For a list of packet pick-up locations, please visit www.moonlightramble.com. Advance registration is open until August 21. Riders can still register at the event, but the commemorative t-shirt is not included.
In October 1964, Dick Leary, a ride leader for the Ozark Area Council of American Youth Hostels (the forerunner of Gateway Council, HI-USA), organized an urban nighttime bicycle ride, starting at midnight at St. Louis Union Station. Unfortunately, no one else showed up, so Dick was the sole participant in the first Moonlight Ramble. He tried again the next year and a few more people joined him. Even more came the following year and by the early 1970s the ride was drawing thousands of participants! Since this was a leisurely ride rather than a race, it had broad appeal. It was known early as the ‘Midnight Ramble’ but has been dubbed the ‘Moonlight Ramble’ since the 1970s.
Some riders came as children and are now bringing their own children to the event to continue the tradition. People have come from all over the country to participate and some even decorate their bikes (and bodies) to show their spirit!
HI-USA is the beneficiary of the 2015 Moonlight Ramble and is the American affiliate of the Hostelling International network of more than 4,000 hostels in over 80 countries. As a nonprofit organization, they are celebrating 75 years of experience in serving young travelers. Hostelling International USA (registered as American Youth Hostels, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization founded in 1934 to promote international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. HI-USA operates a network of over 60 quality hostel accommodations throughout the United States that are inexpensive, safe and clean.
