Event Description: |
Watch local history come alive at Missouri’s first nationally-recognized Underground Railroad site, the historic Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing from noon to 5 p.m. on May 5. The “The Unfair Fair: Prejudice on the Pike” event will chronicle the untold story of how people of color were treated unfairly during the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The free event is open to people of all ages and will feature a replication of the 1904 World’s Fair “Pike,” recreating the festivities of the Fair. Original, life-size photos from 1904, with information explaining how various cultures were exploited for others’ enjoyment will also be on display. Attendees can enjoy historical re-enactments; Vaudeville-inspired acts; a magic show by Circus Harmony; interactive science exhibits from the St. Louis Science Center; international acts, including Middle Eastern Dance and African drumming; music, food and more.
